The Navigator Role

Why navigators exist

Millions of people lack a home internet connection, a working device or the confidence to use them. When care moves online, those people get left behind. A navigator closes that gap one person at a time.

The three parts of the digital divide

Access (a connection and a device), skills (knowing how to use them) and trust (feeling safe online). Most people you help are missing one or two, not all three.

What you do

Set up devices, get people connected, teach portal and telehealth skills, check information sources, and refer people to services. You coach; the client stays in control.

The Navigator Role continued

What you do not do

Give medical advice, diagnose, choose treatments, or make decisions for a client. Clinical questions go to the care team.

Boundaries that protect everyone

Never keep a client's passwords. Never log in as the client when they are not present. Never share what a client tells you outside your team. Follow your organization's rules on reporting safety concerns.

Coach Lucy Tip · Guide, don't drive. Keep the device in your client's hands and let them tap every step.

Words Navigators Use

Digital divide

The gap between people who have internet access, devices and skills and those who do not.

Digital equity

When everyone has the access, skills and support to fully take part online.

Scope of practice

The tasks a role is trained and allowed to do.

Live It · Scenario

Mr. Ortiz and the blood test results

Mr. Ortiz, 67, has his lab results in the portal and asks you what his cholesterol number means and whether he should stop his medicine.

Your navigation steps

  1. Help him open and read the result screen
  2. Point out where the normal range is shown
  3. Explain that only his care team can say what it means for him
  4. Help him send a portal message to his doctor with his question
  5. Note the referral in your log

In the Qwest, the steps are shuffled. Put them in the best order to help the client and earn your LIVE It coins.

  2. Look it up and answer
  3. Help them ask their care team
  4. Tell them to stop if it causes side effects
2. Which is part of the digital divide?
  1. Access
  2. Skills
  3. Trust
  4. All of these
3. A client wants you to save their password so you can help next time. You:
  1. Save it in your phone
  2. Write it on their intake form
  3. Help them store it safely themselves
  4. Keep it in a locked drawer
4. Digital equity means:
  1. Everyone gets the same phone
  2. Everyone has the access, skills and support to take part online
  3. Internet is free
  4. Only seniors get help
5. When is it OK to log in as a client when they are not there?
  1. When they ask by text
  2. Never
  3. When it is urgent
  4. When you are their friend

Answers are on page 11. In the Qwest this is the Boss Quiz — score 80% to earn the station badge.

Teach It Forward

The fastest way to master a skill is to teach it. Your Share It challenge:

  1. Tell one person what a Digital Health Navigator does and why it matters in your community.
  2. Use teach-back: ask them to show you the step in their own words.
  3. Post what you learned (no client names) in your group or the Share It Studio to earn SHARE It coins.
