Getting Connected

Ways to get online

Home internet (cable, fiber, DSL or fixed wireless), a phone data plan, a hotspot, or public Wi-Fi at libraries and community centers. The right choice depends on cost, coverage and how the household uses it.

Lifeline

A federal program that lowers a phone or internet bill for eligible low-income households, by up to $9.25 a month, or more on Tribal lands. Households often qualify through Medicaid, SNAP, SSI, federal housing aid or income. Apply through the National Verifier or a participating company.

Low-cost plans

Many internet companies offer reduced-price plans for families on SNAP, Medicaid, school lunch or other programs. Plans and prices change, so check the provider's current offer.

Getting Connected continued

The ACP has ended

The federal Affordable Connectivity Program stopped in June 2024. Clients who lost that discount may still qualify for Lifeline or a provider's low-cost plan.

Devices

Libraries, digital inclusion offices, nonprofits and some workforce programs lend or give laptops and hotspots. Pima County's Learn to Earn, for example, lets completers keep a laptop. Check what is offered locally.

Coach Lucy Tip · Guide, don't drive. Keep the device in your client's hands and let them tap every step.
