Plain Language and Teach-Back

Plain language

Short sentences, everyday words, one step at a time. Say "tap the blue button" instead of "select the submit icon".

Teach-back

Ask the client to show or tell you the step in their own words: "Show me how you'd find your next appointment." It checks your teaching, not their intelligence.

Their hands on the device

Let the client tap and type. If you take over, they learn that they can't do it. Guide, don't drive.

Plain Language and Teach-Back continued

Older adults

Allow extra time, reduce background noise, check vision and hearing supports, and write steps on a card they can keep.

Language and culture

Use professional interpreters, not children, for health matters. Offer materials and device settings in the client's language. Ask about preferences rather than assume.

Coach Lucy Tip · Guide, don't drive. Keep the device in your client's hands and let them tap every step.

Live It · Scenario

Teaching Mrs. Chen to refill

You showed Mrs. Chen how to request a refill. She nodded, but at her next visit she says she could not do it at home.

Your navigation steps

  1. Ask her to show you each step
  2. Notice where she gets stuck
  3. Re-teach that one step in plain words
  4. Write the steps on a card in her language
  5. Use teach-back again before she leaves

In the Qwest, the steps are shuffled. Put them in the best order to help the client and earn your LIVE It coins.
