Health Apps and Home Devices

Remote monitoring

Some clinics give patients devices that send readings to the care team. Others ask patients to log readings in an app or portal. Ask the clinic which one they use.

Blood pressure the right way

Sit quietly 5 minutes, feet flat, back supported, arm on a table at heart level, cuff on bare skin. No caffeine, smoking or exercise for 30 minutes before. Take two readings a minute apart.

Glucose meters

Wash and dry hands, use the side of the fingertip, check that strips are not expired and match the meter, and record the time and whether it was before or after a meal.

Health Apps and Home Devices continued

Pulse oximeters

Warm hands, no nail polish, sit still. These devices can read less accurately on darker skin, so trends and symptoms matter more than one number.

Choosing an app

Check who made it, what data it collects, who it shares data with, and whether a clinician or the clinic recommends it. If the privacy policy is unclear, choose another app.

Coach Lucy Tip · Guide, don't drive. Keep the device in your client's hands and let them tap every step.

Mr. James's high readings

Mr. James's new BP cuff keeps showing high numbers. He takes readings right after his morning coffee and walk, with the cuff over his sleeve.

Your navigation steps

  1. Review the correct technique with him
  2. Help pair the cuff with the clinic app
  3. Take two practice readings correctly
  4. Show where readings appear for his care team
  5. Remind him to call the clinic about any reading they told him to report

In the Qwest, the steps are shuffled. Put them in the best order to help the client and earn your LIVE It coins.

Teach It Forward

The fastest way to master a skill is to teach it. Your Share It challenge:

  1. Show someone how to take their blood pressure the right way.
  2. Use teach-back: ask them to show you the step in their own words.
  3. Post what you learned (no client names) in your group or the Share It Studio to earn SHARE It coins.
