Devices and Accessibility

The setup checklist

Charge, update the software, set a screen lock, create or recover the account (Apple ID or Google account), connect to Wi-Fi, and write the account recovery details somewhere the client controls.

Make it readable

iPhone: Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size. Android: Settings > Accessibility or Display > Font size. Bigger text and bold text help many people.

Make it heard

Screen readers read the screen aloud: VoiceOver on iPhone, TalkBack on Android. Spoken Content or Select to Speak reads a selected section.

Devices and Accessibility continued

Make it captioned

Live Captions (iPhone) and Live Caption or Live Transcribe (Android) turn speech into text, including during video visits.

Make it simpler

Fewer apps on the home screen, a large-icon layout, and Assistive Access (iPhone) or Easy mode (some Android phones) reduce confusion.

Coach Lucy Tip · Guide, don't drive. Keep the device in your client's hands and let them tap every step.

Teach It Forward

The fastest way to master a skill is to teach it. Your Share It challenge:

  1. Teach one person a phone setting that makes their screen easier to use.
