Urinary Tract and Nephrology
Dr. Rob explains · refers to a lack of urine being expelled from the body and combines two word parts: a - meaning lack of and uria- referring to urine. Less than 100 cc of urine being expelled per day classifies as the condition of anuria. Causes can be categorized into three main groups depending upon where a problem occurs in the urinary tract. The term renal refers to the kidneys, therefore pre-renal issues occur before the kidneys, renal issues occur in the kidneys, and post-renal issues are disorders that occur after the kidneys. An example of a pre-renal issue could be from blood vessel damage from hypertension. A renal issue would result from a sick kidney. A post-renal issue might be from an obstruction like a kidney stone known as nephrolithiasis.
Dr. Rob explains · When the word part cysto - meaning bladder is combined with the word part -scopy describing the process of the examination with a scope, we have the medical term cystoscopy which is the process of examining the bladder with a scoped instrument. The scope that is used in a cystoscopy can be rigid or flexible depending upon the gender of the patient. Female anatomy of the urethra is more appropriate in using a rigid straight scope while male anatomy requires a flexible scope in the longer urethra. Cystoscopies are used to diagnose and treat conditions such as urinary tract infections, bladder cancer, bladder control issues, bladder stones and inflammation, as well as enlarged prostates in male patients.

Dr. Rob explains · is the detection of blood in the urine and is comprised of two word parts: hemato - meaning blood and - uria referring to urine. Sometimes hematuria is able to be seen clearly as urine is much darker in color than the normally clear to yellow urine. However, hematuria can also be unseen to the eye as only a small amount of blood may be present. Some potential causes of blood in the urine include urinary tract infections, kidney infections, trauma, an enlarged prostate gland in males, bladder or kidney stones, cancer, or medication reactions.
Dr. Rob explains · A nephrolith is a kidney stone and is incredibly painful. The medical term nephrolith is made up of two word parts: nephro – meaing kidney and - lith meaning a stone. When the body forms a kidney stone, hard deposits of minerals and salts in the kidneys from urine clump together in the form of a stone. Various types of stones can form in the kidneys depending upon what minerals the stone is specifically made from: calcium which are the most common, uric acid stones deriving from certain medical conditions, struvite stones from a urinary tract infection, or cystine stones from an over excretion of amino acids. Diet, weight, and certain medical conditions can contribute to the formation of kidney stones.

Dr. Rob explains · A nephroptosis occurs when a kidney falls out of its normal position in the abdomen. This process of falling out of normal position is referred to as a prolapse. The medical term nephroptosis is made up of the word part nephro – meaning kidney and the word part - optosis referring to a prolapse. Although the kidney locations do have some flexibility, a nephroptosis is considered a movement downward of a kidney more than 5 cm. The kidneys may move out of position due to insufficient support structure and usually people are born with this condition. Symptoms of a kidney prolapse include pain in the side, nausea or vomiting, high blood pressure, or blood in the urine.

Dr. Rob explains · describes a condition of undescended testicles found particularly in infant males. The three word parts crypto - meaning hidden, - orchido referring to testicles, and - ism meaning a condition come together to create this medical term. If one or two testicles did not descend into the scrotum from the inguinal canal in the abdomen during fetal development, it is considered cryptorchidism. If a testicle or testicles have not descended into the scrotum by age 6 months, an evaluation should be conducted to explore treatment. Possible surgery may be recommended to avoid damage to testicles.
Dr. Rob explains · A hydrocele is a herniation or sac containing fluid in the scrotum and is comprised of two word parts - hydro - meaning water or fluid and - cele referring to a herniation. A hydrocele causes swelling in the scrotum from a collection of fluid surrounding the testicles and is usually due to inflammation or injury. Pain and swelling may need treatment especially if it is linked to another condition.

Dr. Rob explains · When the word part orchido - meaning testicle is blended with - algia meaning pain, the medical term orchidalgia is formed to refer to testicle pain. Possible causes of testicle pain include trauma, post-vasectomy recovery, a hernia, testicular torsion where the testicles twist in the scrotum as well as scrotal edema which is a build-up of fluid.
Dr. Rob explains · A prostatectomy is the removal of the prostate gland and involves the word part - ectomy meaning to remove. A prostate gland may be removed when the prostate becomes cancerous and is usually done with the options of either open or robotic surgery.
Dr. Rob explains · A prostate ablation is a procedure performed to decrease the size of an enlarged prostate. An ablation refers to an intentional destruction of tissue to fix a condition. This particular procedure begins with an instrument inserted into the urethra that runs to the prostate. Once instrumentation is inserted, either a laser, water vapor, or heat is used to remove the unnecessary prostate tissue.

Dr. Rob explains · A vasectomy is the removal of a portion of the vas deferens for the purpose of contraception. To create this medical term vas- meaning vessel is combined with the word part - ectomy meaning to remove. As mentioned at the beginning of this lesson, the vessel that transports sperm is called the vas deferens. In a vasectomy, a portion of this vessel is removed to avoid egg fertilization during intercourse. The remaining ends of the vas deferens are burned or cauterized in order to be sealed off from releasing sperm into the semen.
