Pulmonology Terms

AlveoliSmall air sacs in the lung tissue that allow for gas exchange
ApneaLack of (absence of) breathing
a- / an- no or not; lack of-pnea breathing

Dr. Rob explains · When the word part a- meaning lack of or not is combined with the word part –pnea meaning breathing, we have the medical term apnea which refers to moments with no breathing. This can happen especially during sleep especially in patients who snore or take certain medications and is referred to as sleep apnea. A recommendation for sleep apnea includes conducting a sleep study if snoring or the apnea is frequent, is for long periods of time, or is accompanied by daytime fatigue. Other recommendations for sleep apnea include weight control, avoiding alcohol, avoiding sleeping medications, quitting smoking, sleeping on one’s side or belly, use of a saline nose spray, use of a CPAP device to assist in breathing during sleep or possible surgery.

BronchitisInflammation of the bronchial tubes in the lungs
broncho- bronchial tubes in the lungs-itis inflammation

Dr. Rob explains · The medical term bronchitis refers to inflamed bronchial tubes and is made up of two word parts: broncho – referring to the bronchial tubes and –itis meaning inflammation. Inflamed bronchial tubes are usually caused by a virus and create excess mucus in the constricted airways. Symptoms include a cough with mucus, shortness of breath, wheezing, and fatigue. Bronchitis can be acute meaning short term or chronic meaning long term. Smoking is usually the cause of chronic bronchitis.

DyspneaDifficulty breathing
dys- difficult or poor-pnea breathing

Dr. Rob explains · When the word part dys- meaning difficult or poor is placed with the word part –pnea meaning to breathe, we have the medical term dyspnea or difficulty breathing. A patient may have difficulty breathing for a number of reasons related to a condition, disease, or infection. Potential causes can include: asthma attacks, Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease known as COPD, anxiety attacks, heart failure, pneumonia, and complications from a COVID -19 infection.

TachypneaFast breathing
tachy- fast-pnea breathing

Dr. Rob explains · refers to fast breathing and is made up of two word parts: tachy- meaning fast and –pnea referring to breathing. Many disorders and conditions could be reasons for tachypnea. One potential cause is when the the body is trying to correct an imbalance of oxygen to carbon dioxide ratio in your body. Strategies such as breathing in and out of a paper bag force the body to slow down the breathing and return to a normal rate. Other potential causes of tachypnea include panic attack or anxiety attacks, asthma attacks, certain medications or drug use, anemia, or heart failure.
