Orthopedics
Orthopedics module
Welcome, Translator!
Medical words look hard until you see the trick: most are built from small parts — a prefix at the front, a root in the middle and a suffix at the end. Learn the parts and you can translate words you have never seen before.
In this book
- 4 word parts for Orthopedics
- 8 medical terms
- Dr. Rob’s plain-language explanation for each term
- Two review worksheets with an answer key, plus game links on every page
🪙 You earn LEARN It coins as you turn the pages, and a chapter badge when you reach each section.

Dr. Rob explains · A bursa is a serous sac that is found between a tendon and a bone. When this bursa becomes inflamed, the word part - itis meaning inflammation combines to create the term bursitis or inflammation of a bursa. The fluid-filled cavities are located at sites where tendons or muscles pass over bony prominences near joints such as the knee. These cushions facilitate movement and reduces friction but can become inflamed from overuse.
Dr. Rob explains · A bursectomy is a procedure involving the removal of a bursa sac. As discussed in the last segment, a bursa is a serous sac between a tendon and a bone. When combined with the word part -ectomy meaning to remove, we have the medical term for a bursectomy. Often a damaged bursa sac is drained with a needle called a bursacentesis. However, when that procedure fails to be successful and injections with steroids fail as well, sometimes the bursa simply needs to be removed.
Dr. Rob explains · When a meniscus in the knee is torn, surgery may be needed to trim torn sections and repair the damage. This is called a Meniscectomy and describes this removal of the meniscus using the word part -ectomy meaning to remove.
