ColonoscopyExamination of rectum and large intestine by a flexible scope instrument
colono- colon-scopy to examine using a scope instrument

Dr. Rob explains · When the word part colono- meaning colon or large intestine is mixed with the word part – scopy meaning to examine with a scope instrument, you have the medical term colonoscopy. A colonoscopy examines the large intestine or colon using a flexible scoped instrument. As with an endoscope, if a patient is having continual difficulties with digestion or lower abdominal pain, a gastroenterologist may want to see the lining of the large intestine to look for polyps, lesions, infections, or diseased sections of the large intestine also known as the colon. The process for a colonoscopy is similar to an endoscope, however, the colon must be completely clear of waste material in order to perform this procedure.

DyspepsiaPoor digestion
dys- difficult or poor-pepsia digestion

Dr. Rob explains · The medical term dyspepsia is comprised of two word parts: dys- meaning difficult or poor and –pepsia meaning digestion. When put together, the medical term dyspepsia means difficult or poor digestion. Depending upon the patient’s lifestyle, habits, or existing medical conditions, there may be many causes for poor digestion. Some of those causes include: eating too quickly, unhealthy eating habits, irritable bowel syndrome as well as many others. Celiac disease is caused by an allergic reaction to the protein found in wheat breads and other grains. Crohn's Disease is a disorder where the body attacks itself as it recognizes some foods as if they were intruders in the body. It can be very painful and lead to many gastrointestinal complications.

EndoscopyExamination of the stomach and duodenum by a flexible scope instrument
endo- inside-scopy to examine using a scope instrument

Dr. Rob explains · When the word part endo- meaning inside is blended with the word part –scopy meaning to examine using a scope instrument, you have the term endoscopy. Literally translated, the term endoscopy would mean an examination inside using a scoped instrument. However, you may wonder “inside what”? In the case of an endoscopy, it is an examination of the stomach and duodenum inside of the digestive tract by a flexible scope instrument. If a patient is having continual difficulties with digestion or stomach pain, a gastroenterologist may want to see the lining of the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum.

GastralgiaStomach pain
gastro- stomach-algia pain

Dr. Rob explains · The medical term gastralgia is comprised of two word parts: gastro- meaning stomach and –algia meaning pain. When put together, the medical term gastralgia means stomach pain. Pain in stomach can have many different causes including indigestion, infections, or inflammation. Gastralgia can also be the result of stomach acid issues such as acid reflux where the stomach acid kicks up or sprays into the esophagus from an improper closing of the sphincter muscle at the top of the stomach. In previous segments we have also discussed how ulcers can form from a lack of mucus in the stomach lining. Even anxiety related conditions can cause stomach issues and induce gastralgia.

GastrectomyRemoval of the stomach
gastro- stomach-ectomy to remove

Dr. Rob explains · The medical term gastrectomy is comprised of two word parts: gastro- meaning stomach and –ectomy meaning to remove. When put together, the medical term gastrectomy means a removal of the stomach. In some patients who have extreme issues with weight, a gastrectomy may be recommended by a physician. This procedure is not intended for minor or even moderate weight loss but is reserved for extreme situations where the patient’s weight is causing serious health concerns. A gastrectomy is a surgery where a large portion of the stomach is removed and only a smaller portion is left to process food. A common gastrectomy is known as a “Sleeve gastrectomy” and is shown in the illustration here.

GastritisInflammation of the stomach
gastro- stomach-itis inflammation

Dr. Rob explains · The medical term gastritis is comprised of two word parts: gastro- meaning stomach and –itis meaning inflammation. When put together, the medical term gastritis means an inflammation of the stomach. As we discussed on the first segment of this lesson, the lining in stomach creates mucus, enzymes, and acid for food breakdown. If the stomach lining becomes inflamed for any reason, the lining cannot create the protective mucus that it needs to guard it from the stomach acid or create other needed materials for proper digestion. Pain and indigestion are the unfortunate result of this inflammation of the stomach lining.
