Medical words look hard until you see the trick: most are built from small parts — a prefix at the front, a root in the middle and a suffix at the end. Learn the parts and you can translate words you have never seen before.
In this book
- 10 word parts for Endocrinology
- 9 medical terms
- Dr. Rob’s plain-language explanation for each term
- Two review worksheets with an answer key, plus game links on every page
🪙 You earn LEARN It coins as you turn the pages, and a chapter badge when you reach each section.

Endocrinology Terms
Dr. Rob explains · refers to the removal of a gland and consists of two word parts: adeno- meaning gland and –ectomy meaning to remove. If a gland is diseased or is cancerous, it may need to be removed from the body. Adenectomy is a general term that refers to any gland removal. More specific terms would be used to describe a particular procedure or refer to the specific gland to be removed. Some examples of an adenectomy include the removal of the thyroid gland as shown here, a salivary gland removal, or a lymph gland removal.
Dr. Rob explains · refers to the inflammation of a gland and consists of two word parts: adeno- meaning gland and –itis meaning inflammation. Inflammation of any gland can be as a result of infection, irritation, a blockage, or disease. Adenitis is a general term that would refer to any gland becoming inflamed or swollen. A more specific term may be used depending upon the affected gland, the nature of the inflammation or location. Some examples of adenitis shown here include an infection of a tear gland in the eyelid, a swollen thyroid gland, and an inflamed salivary gland.

Dr. Rob explains · From our last segment, we know that a cholecyst is the gallbladder. When combined with the word part –itis meaning inflammation, we have the medical term cholecystitis which is an inflammation of the gallbladder. When the gallbladder becomes diseased or develops gallstones, it can become inflamed and cause a series of problems. Signs of gallbladder issues include pain in the upper right portion of the abdomen, indigestion when eating fatty foods, nausea or vomiting, gas or bloating, diarrhea, and discolored stools (either more dark or light in color than normal). CHOLELITH The medical term cholelith is derived from two word parts: chole- meaning gall or bile and –litho- meaning stone.

Dr. Rob explains · When the word part hepato- meaning liver is combined with the word part –itis meaning inflammation, we have the medical term hepatitis which is an inflammation of the liver. Hepatitis is a condition that is usually caused by a virus. Various strains of hepatitis-causing viruses can be contracted in different ways. Hepatitis A is contracted from a virus by the ingesting of infected feces. An example of this would be drinking from an unclean water source that is contaminated by feces. Hepatitis B is contracted from another infected person by contact with infected bodily fluid either through sexual contact, sharing needles, or through the birth process from mother to baby.
Dr. Rob explains · The medical term hyperglycemia consists of three word parts: hyper- meaning too much, glyco- meaning sugar and –emia referring to a condition of the blood. When put together, we have the term hyperglycemia which refers to a high blood sugar level. Blood sugar levels are regulated by a substance called insulin that is made in the pancreas. If a patient is diabetic, insulin production is not high enough to regulate the body and sugar levels remain too high from food intake. Diabetes must be regulated by diet or medication to keep serious complications from occurring. Typical symptoms of blood sugar levels that are too high include: headache, weakness, thirst, and frequent urination.

Dr. Rob explains · The medical term hypoglycemia consists of three word parts: hypo- meaning too little, glyco- meaning sugar and –emia referring to a condition of the blood. When put together, we have the term hypoglycemia which refers to a low blood sugar level. Blood sugar levels are regulated by a substance called insulin that is made in the pancreas. Blood sugar levels that are lower than the standard appropriate range are considered hypoglycemia. Some common symptoms are hunger, irritability, sweating, lightheadedness and becoming shakey. Typical treatment can be simply eating a food higher in sugar for immediate regulation. If the condition is more complicated, medication can be prescribed.
Dr. Rob explains · The medical term hyperthyroidism consists of three word parts: hyper- meaning too much , thyroid simply referring to the thyroid gland, and –ism meaning a condition. When put together, we have the term hyperthyroidism which means an overactive thyroid condition. The mineral iodine is needed in our body to regulate the thyroid gland and to generate hormones in the thyroid that regulate metabolism. If there is an overproduction of thyroid hormone, this causes an enlarged thyroid called a "goiter" that develops slowly over time. Complications from an enlarged thyroid include difficulty breathing, a chronic cough, throat tightness or a feeling of choking.

Dr. Rob explains · is a condition that is caused by some form of liver malfunction or disease. In the body, a yellowish pigmented substance called bilirubin is created from the normal breakdown of red blood cells. This substance is normally filtered out by the liver. However, if the liver cannot do its job correctly, then unfiltered bilirubin builds up in the system and is usually seen in a yellowish pigmentation of the skin & eyes. Newborn babies can also develop jaundice in the first weeks of life as their liver has not yet begun to fully function after being dependent on the mother in the womb.
