Neurology module
Welcome, Translator!
Medical words look hard until you see the trick: most are built from small parts — a prefix at the front, a root in the middle and a suffix at the end. Learn the parts and you can translate words you have never seen before.
In this book
- 7 word parts for Neurology
- 6 medical terms
- Dr. Rob’s plain-language explanation for each term
- Two review worksheets with an answer key, plus game links on every page
🪙 You earn LEARN It coins as you turn the pages, and a chapter badge when you reach each section.

Dr. Rob explains · The brain is able to process information because of electrical activity in our body. Using an electroencephalogram is a simple and effective way to measure a person's brain wave activity to detect abnormalities such as seizures. Detectors called leads are placed on the head either using a hat or stuck individually. Brain wave electricity is measured and sent to a display for analysis.
Dr. Rob explains · is a medical term that refers to electrical testing of the nervous system functioning. It is made up of three word parts: electro- meaning electricity, neuro- referring to the nerves and nervous system, and diagnostic which refers to a test used to diagnose medical issues. If tissue damage occurs that affects the brain or nervous system resulting from injury, disease, or deterioration, an electroneurodiagnostic may be used to detect the extent of the damage and sometimes even its source. There are many forms of brain and nervous system tests. One type is an electroencephalograph as discussed in the last segment.

Dr. Rob explains · When the word part encephalo- meaning brain is combined with the word part –itis meaning inflamma tion, we get the medical term encephalitis meaning inflammation of the brain. Inflammation of the brain is usually due to viral infections and can be caused by many types of viruses. However, encephalitis can also be caused by bacteria, insect bites, or immune system disorders. Young children or elderly are more prone to suffer from a severe case.
Dr. Rob explains · is a medical term that consists of three word parts. Encephalo- which means brain, myelo- meaning spinal cord and -pathy meaning disease are combined to form the term encephalomyelopathy which means disease of the brain and spinal cord Any condition that causes widespread disease of the brain and spinal cord can be described by this medical term. Some examples include Leber hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON) which will cause a loss of vision due to brain deterioration. Leigh disease is a metabolic disorder involving the deep gray nuclei of the brain and degeneration of tissues.

Dr. Rob explains · The meninges is a 3 layered membrane protecting brain and spinal cord. As shown here, it is made up of the tough outer dura mater layer, the middle cushioned arachnoid layer, and the delicate inner pia mater. The meninges protects and cushions the brain as well as supports the central nervous system.
Dr. Rob explains · When the meninges becomes inflamed, it is referred to as meningitis by putting the term meninges with the –itis ending that refers to inflammation. Meningitis can be caused by either a viral or bacterial infection and can have serious debilitating complications or death if not treated quickly. Symptoms are tricky as they can easily be confused with the flu. Symptoms include: extreme headache, fever, stiff neck, vomiting, muscle pain, fatigue. A couple of symptomatic differences to watch for with meningitis that can differentiate it from a normal flu is the stiff neck and extreme headache. If those symptoms are prominent, seek medical attention right away.
