Hematology
Hematology module
Welcome, Translator!
Medical words look hard until you see the trick: most are built from small parts — a prefix at the front, a root in the middle and a suffix at the end. Learn the parts and you can translate words you have never seen before.
In this book
- 15 word parts for Hematology
- 7 medical terms
- Dr. Rob’s plain-language explanation for each term
- Two review worksheets with an answer key, plus game links on every page
🪙 You earn LEARN It coins as you turn the pages, and a chapter badge when you reach each section.

Hematology Terms
Dr. Rob explains · The medical term erythrocytes refers to your body’s red blood cells and is comprised of two word parts…. Erythro meaning red and cyto meaning cell. Erythrocytes or red blood cells get their red coloration from a protein on the cell called hemoglobin. Red blood cells have the very important job of carrying oxygen to all cells in the body that is vital to their moment by moment functioning. When these same red blood cells reach a destination where oxygen is delivered, they will also transport our cells’ waste material of carbon dioxide through the blood to be exhaled by lungs. Red blood cells that are carrying oxygen will appear more red than blood that is not carrying oxygen.
Dr. Rob explains · The medical term leukocytes refers to your body’s white blood cells and is comprised of two word parts…. leuko meaning white and cyto meaning cell. Leukocytes – otherwise known as white blood cells - help the body fight infections and are vital to our immune system response of intruders. Various types of white blood cells exist in the body that each have specific jobs, but all varieties help our body in particular ways to fight off disease and infection.

Dr. Rob explains · The medical term lymphocytes refers to your body’s white blood cells that are found in the lymph system and is comprised of two word parts…. lymph meaning lymphatic system and cyto meaning cell. The body’s lymph system maintains proper fluid levels in body tissues, removes cell waste, and fights infection. Specialized white blood cells called lymphocytes are vital cells in the lymph system and help the body to fight off diseases. _Please note that the lymphocyte in the illustration shown here has a color that is simply meant for emphasis and does not represent the actual cell color within the body._

Dr. Rob explains · The medical term thrombocytes refers to your body’s clotting cells and is comprised of two word parts…. thrombo meaning clotting and cyto meaning cell. Thrombocytes or clotting cells have a very important job in the body. As they work with a sticky protein fibrinogen they create blood clots when the body is wounded. This helps the body to repair and heal itself. Whenever you have had a scab on your injured skin, you have had the chance to see the thrombocytes and fibrinogen at work to help your skin stick together and repair the damage. Although this is a very important job, it needs to be in the correct balance within the body.
