Outreach

Go where people are

Laundromats, markets, schools, places of worship, bus stops and community events. Ask community members where people gather and when.

A short, clear message

Say who you are, why you are there and what you offer in 30 seconds. Ask permission before going on. Bring materials in the languages people speak.

Respect people's time and choices

A "no" is fine. Leave the door open: "Here's how to reach me if you change your mind." Never pressure people to sign up.

Outreach safety

Work in pairs when you can, tell your supervisor where you will be, keep your phone charged and leave any place that feels unsafe. Your safety comes first.

Track and follow up

Count contacts and what people asked for, not private health details. Follow up within a week on everyone who asked for help.

Back-to-school health day

Your clinic is joining a back-to-school event at an elementary school. The goals: help families with health coverage and school-required vaccines.

Your CHW steps

  1. Plan with school and community partners where and when to set up
  2. Prepare a short message and materials in the community's languages
  3. Greet families and ask permission before sharing information
  4. With consent, sign up families who want follow-up
  5. Log contacts and follow up within a week
