The community health worker at the bedside

Mark Morales, a Phoenix community health worker who came to the Foundation through an ASU certificate program, recounted visiting hospitalized twins in crisis — and being changed by it.

And just seeing their eyes light up when I walked into the room, I was not expecting that at all.

Those twins belong to Cedric McKethan of Goodyear, a disabled Army veteran with sickle cell trait whose sons are treated at Phoenix Children’s. He described what the Foundation means to a family in crisis.

Having the foundation is another cushion, another buffer. Providing resources or phone calls or just being there with you so you don't feel so alone when you're going through this.

Know your status — trait and disease

Dr. Rob Gillio wove in his own screening story — a hidden genetic background discovered late — to hammer the universal message.

So I would encourage anyone out there, get screened for a sickle cell, as well as the other things your state has to offer.

It landed for Moses Akpan, who pointed to the flyer that captures why silent damage is so dangerous.

There is this flyer that says the pain is loud, that the damage is silent.

Protect the gift

As the circle came around, Coach Lucy Howell named the show’s tag — and the reason cold weather, dehydration, and holiday stress get so much airtime in a sickle cell show.

Every single day that you can breathe and move is a gift. You'll notice our tag is protect the gift.
