“I have an adrenal disorder — my adrenal glands make too much or too little cortisol or related hormones. I take daily medications and carry emergency injectable steroids in case I get sick or injured. I wanted you to know because adrenal crisis can be fatal in hours. If I’m vomiting, severely weak, confused, or unconscious, give my emergency injection if you can, and call 911.”

What Adrenal Disorders Are
Adrenal glands make too much (Cushing) or too little (Addison) cortisol. Or other hormones.
Why Daily Cortisol
Your body needs cortisol to handle stress. Without it, illness becomes crisis.
Spot the Red Flags
Adrenal crisis = vomiting + weakness + low BP. Give injection. 911.
Triggers
Illness, surgery, stress, missed doses, hot weather, intense exercise.
Know Your Type
Primary (Addison's), secondary (pituitary), congenital, iatrogenic from steroids.
Stress Dosing
Double on minor illness, triple on major, IV if vomiting. Written plan critical.
Emergency Injection
Solu-Cortef IM. Family trained. Refresh annually. Don't let it expire.
Salt & Hydration
Mineralocorticoid sometimes needed. Salt cravings can be a clue.
Surgery Prep
Tell anesthesia. Stress dose pre-op. IV cortisol intra-op.
Make Every Visit Count
Bring cortisol log, stress events, any near-crises.
Your Care Team
Endocrinologist, sometimes geneticist if congenital, PCP, surgeon if needed.
Medical Alert
Bracelet, phone medical ID, wallet card. Non-negotiable.
Insurance & Cost
Hydrocortisone is generic and cheap. Emergency kit usually covered.
Teach & Mentor
Adrenal patients are rare; community support is precious.
Advocate
Crisis prevention requires education in ERs, schools, workplaces.
Research & Trials
Modified-release hydrocortisone, dual-release formulations, gene therapy for CAH.
