What If the Prescription Is Dinner?

Geisinger started writing prescriptions you fill at a food pharmacy. Why food access belongs in the treatment plan, not the lifestyle advice section.

Dr. Rob has been reading the 2026 Food Is Medicine annual report — a review of studies published over the preceding year looking at food as an intervention — and thinking about Geisinger's food pharmacy model, where produce is dispensed the way a medication would be. Every quote below plays the exact moment from the recording — just tap it.

Food as load-bearing, not advice

The habit he is pushing against is familiar from both sides of the desk: the doctor reaches for a pill to solve something, and the patient asks for a pill, or a shot, to make the problem go away easily. He is sympathetic to the impulse and unconvinced by it.

But the concept here is that food is needed to make treatment work.

Insecurity is not the same as hunger

There's also something called food insecurity, and it's not just hunger

Someone can have calories and still be short of what they need — the right kinds of food, calories with nutrients behind them, the appropriate micronutrients, too much salt or too little depending on their condition. Flattening all of that into going hungry loses the part clinicians can actually act on.

The knowledge is part of the asset

His Force for Health angle is that access alone is not sufficient. Knowing what to buy, how to obtain it, how to afford it and how to use it is itself Community Health Capital — and you may not personally hold it. Your spouse might. Your doctor might.

Sometimes the most effective healthcare intervention doesn't arrive in the medical bottles. It arrives in the grocery bag and with someone who knows what to do with it.

Which makes his closing ask a referral, not a resolution: if you need help knowing what to do with it or how to access it, have your doctor put you in touch with a registered dietitian — and demand it of your healthcare system.

✏️ Editor’s note: Verify the exact 2026 annual report and the "57 studies" count before external publication; one phrase near the end of the caption file was unclear and should be checked against the audio. On GLP-1 medications the recording's "we don't know the long-term effects" understates the evidence — substantial long-term outcome and safety data now exist, though very-long-term questions remain.
