What If We Celebrated Recovery as Loudly as We Talk About Addiction?

We have a vocabulary for addiction — overdoses, fentanyl, dealers. Dr. Rob asks what it would sound like if recovery got the same volume.

He opens by deliberately performing the way communities usually talk about addiction, and then turns it over. Every quote below plays the exact moment from the recording — just tap it.

A question about volume

What if we celebrated recovery as loudly as we talk about addiction?

The lines that follow — about addicts, dealers, fentanyl, overdoses, all these evil people — are voiced on purpose so he can set them against what he has actually watched happen. People face it head-on, discover they can overcome it, and turn the experience into a strength that shows up in better relationships, more productive work, and families that heal.

The people who impress him most

Not the chip count. He is explicit about that. One month, one year, two years, five years — those matter, but the multiplier is elsewhere: the people who recovered enough to become the person somebody else can call in the middle of the night, or sit beside at a daily meeting.

That one of the most valuable things that's happened to me this year is watching a family member survive and thrive, not just stay alive, after the effects of alcohol and addiction to a deadly drug.

A classification, not a sentiment

In our community, we have survivors. They are community assets to celebrate and support, and we have mentors for those survivors. Support them, hug them, thank them.

That is the move this dose makes. Lived experience and peer mentorship stop being a story about individuals and become Community Health Capital — something a community counts among its assets, not something it manages as a problem.

🩺 The Daily Dose 🫂 Recovery 🤝 Peer Mentorship 💬 Stigma
✏️ Editor’s note: The opening deliberately mimics stigmatising language in order to contrast it with recovery — do not excerpt those first lines for social without the turn that follows them. Personal family disclosure — review before broad reuse. SAMHSA's 2026 Recovery Month messaging emphasises peer support, recovery-friendly workplaces and community connection.
