Quick Check-In, Before We Begin

Right now, how confident are you using a wrench or pair of pliers?

How likely are you to help fix something at a neighbor's house?

One Quick Knowledge Question

Which way do you turn an adjustable wrench to LOOSEN a bolt?

Righty-tighty, lefty-loosey. Counter-clockwise loosens almost every standard bolt and pipe fitting in your house.

Meet the Wrench and the Pliers

A wrench and a pair of pliers do related but different jobs. A wrench grips a six-sided nut or bolt head from the outside and turns it. Pliers grip almost anything โ€” flat surfaces, round wire, stuck nails โ€” and hold or pull. Master both and you've got the household plumbing kit, the bike kit, and the start of an auto kit.

Adjustable Wrench & Slip-Joint Pliers

HANDLE JAWS ADJUSTER JAWS PIVOT GRIPS / HANDLES
HandleLonger = more torque. Pull, don't push โ€” your knuckles will thank you.
JawsThe gripping surface. Make sure they fully seat on the bolt or it will round off.
AdjusterThe thumb wheel on an adjustable wrench. Snug it tight before turning.
PivotWhere pliers hinge. Slip-joint pliers can move the pivot to grip bigger things.

Pliers grip. Wrench turns. Don't use pliers when a wrench will do โ€” pliers chew up the bolt head and you'll be sorry next time you try to remove it.

The Three You'll Meet Most

๐Ÿ”ง
Adjustable Wrench

One wrench, many sizes. Plumbing, bike repair, and most home fixes.

๐Ÿ—œ๏ธ
Slip-Joint Pliers

All-purpose grip. The general handyman pliers.

๐Ÿ“
Needle-Nose Pliers

Long, thin jaws. Tight spaces, small wires, jewelry, electronics.

Beginner walkthrough โ€” when to pick which tool and how to grip without slipping.

How to Use It โ€” The Five Moves

  • Match the size. Snug the wrench jaws all the way onto the nut. A sloppy fit rounds bolts.
  • Pull, don't push. Always PULL the wrench toward you. If you push and it slips, your knuckles meet the wall.
  • Brace the work. Hold the pipe or nut still with one hand or another wrench while you turn.
  • Lefty-loosey, righty-tighty. Counter-clockwise loosens, clockwise tightens. Plumbing reverses on left-hand threads โ€” rare but real.
  • Snug โ€” not Hercules. Tighten until the part stops moving and one more quarter-turn. Over-tightening cracks pipes and strips threads.

You can break more stuff with a wrench than with a hammer. The hammer is honest โ€” it tells you when it's hitting wrong. A wrench just keeps going until something pops.

Safe & Unsafe

โœ… Safe

  • Pull the wrench toward you
  • Brace the pipe or work piece
  • Match jaw size to the nut
  • Wear gloves around rough metal
  • Stop at snug โ€” never crank past resistance

โš ๏ธ Unsafe

  • Pushing the wrench away from you
  • Using pliers on bolt heads (chews them)
  • An adjustable wrench too loose on the nut
  • Standing in the splash zone of a pipe you're about to open
  • Over-tightening โ€” pipes crack, threads strip
Plumbing & water work: Shut the water OFF at the valve before opening any joint. Always. Have a bucket and rags ready. If a valve sticks, that's a 'call a grown-up' moment.

Why This Is a Force for Health, Wealth & Community

Health: A leaky drain pipe rots cabinets and breeds mold. Wealth: Plumbers charge $150+ just to walk in the door. A single trap cleaning is free if you can do it. Community: An older neighbor can't lie under a sink anymore. You can.

Don't wait for it to break. Find one fitting that's already loose, snug it up, and write down what you did. That's how you build the muscle.

Snug a loose pipe nut under a sink

With a flashlight and an adjustable wrench, check every accessible fitting under the kitchen or bathroom sink. Snug anything loose. (Adult supervision for first try.)
