Quick Check-In, Before We Begin

Right now, how confident are you reading IKEA-style instructions?

How likely are you to build something for someone else?

One Quick Knowledge Question

You strip the head of an Allen bolt. What happened?

A too-loose hex key strips the six-sided socket. Always insert the key fully and pick the snug size. If you feel it slipping, STOP โ€” don't keep cranking.
Learn It

Meet the Hex Key (Allen Wrench)

In 1910, an Indiana company called Allen Manufacturing made a little six-sided steel rod and called it a wrench. It changed how the world ships furniture. The hex key fits inside the bolt rather than around it โ€” which means the bolt can sit flush, and the tool can be tiny. That's why every flat-pack furniture box comes with one taped to the inside.

The Hex Key System

6-SIDED LONG END (torque) SHORT END (control) HEX SOCKET (inside the bolt head)
Long endGives torque (twisting power). Use it for tight bolts.
Short endGoes into the bolt. Use the long end for the reverse โ€” short in bolt, push long end down for control.
Hex socketThe 6-sided pocket inside every Allen bolt. Size must match exactly.
SizesMetric (1.5mmโ€“10mm) is standard worldwide. Imperial (1/16"โ€“3/8") for older or US gear.

How to use allen wrench hex key assembly
How to read flat-pack instructions and use a hex key without stripping a bolt.

How to Use It โ€” The Five Moves

  • Lay out everything first. Spread parts on the floor in groups. Hardware in one pile. Manual open. Don't start until everything is visible.
  • Match every bolt to its hex size. Sizes are usually printed in the manual. If the key spins inside the bolt, it's too small โ€” go up one size.
  • Insert FULLY before turning. Push the key all the way into the bolt socket. A half-seated key strips bolts in two turns.
  • Snug everything before tightening anything. Hand-tighten all bolts at a joint first. THEN go around and final-tighten. That stops the frame from binding.
  • Don't gorilla-tight. Furniture bolts are usually going into pre-drilled wood. Over-tightening splits the wood and the joint will fail.

Read the manual cover to cover before you pick up a piece. I know โ€” boring. Twenty minutes of reading saves you two hours of unscrewing.

Reading a Flat-Pack Manual

IKEA-style manuals are pictures only โ€” no words, on purpose, so they ship to every country. The key symbols:

  • Two people icon: Don't try to do this step alone. Get help.
  • Box with a number: That's a hardware bag. Open ONLY the bag you need for that step.
  • Hex key with a size: Use that exact size key, not "close enough."
  • "NO" symbol on a phone: Don't call IKEA โ€” there is no helpline. (Joke. Sort of.)

Safe & Unsafe

โœ… Safe

  • Lay out parts first
  • Read the manual before starting
  • Match hex sizes exactly
  • Use a soft surface (cardboard) under the work
  • Get a second person for big pieces

โš ๏ธ Unsafe

  • Skipping the manual
  • Wrong-size hex key (strips bolts)
  • Tightening before everything is in place
  • Assembling on bare floor โ€” scratches both
  • Carrying a built piece down stairs alone
The bigger pieces: Beds, wardrobes, and tall bookcases tip. Anchor anything taller than your hip to the wall โ€” kits include the anchor. This isn't optional if young kids or pets are in the home.

Why This Is a Force for Health, Wealth & Community

Health: A safe, anchored furniture set prevents real injuries โ€” especially for kids. Wealth: Furniture assembly gigs on TaskRabbit pay $25โ€“$60/hour. People hate doing this and gladly pay. Community: Helping a family that just moved in is the fastest way to become 'the neighbor.'
