“I have thyroid disease — my thyroid gland makes too much or too little hormone, which affects energy, weight, mood, and heart rate. I take a daily medication and get regular blood tests. I wanted you to know because severe thyroid storms (overactive) or myxedema coma (underactive) can be emergencies. Heart racing with confusion, or severe slowness with low temperature — call 911.”

What Thyroid Disease Is
The thyroid makes too much or too little hormone. Affects every cell.
Why Daily Meds Matter
Replacement (levothyroxine) or suppression (methimazole). Long-term.
Spot the Red Flags
Thyroid storm vs myxedema coma — both can kill.
Triggers
Stress, pregnancy, iodine exposure, certain medications (amiodarone, lithium).
Know Your Numbers
TSH, Free T4, sometimes T3, antibodies (TPO, TRAb).
Med Timing
Levothyroxine 30-60 min before food/coffee. Consistency matters.
Lab Schedule
Every 6-8 weeks after dose change, then every 6-12 months.
Iodine, Soy, Calcium
All affect absorption. Time them away from your dose.
Graves' Eye Disease
Bulging eyes, dry eyes, vision changes — ophthalmology referral.
Make Every Visit Count
Bring symptoms, weight log, period changes, last labs.
Your Care Team
Endocrinologist or PCP, sometimes surgeon, ophthalmologist.
Telehealth
Most thyroid management works telehealth.
Insurance & Cost
Most generics are cheap. RAI and surgery covered.
Teach & Mentor
Newly diagnosed patients have lots of questions about food and timing.
Advocate
Thyroid affects 20 million Americans; underdiagnosed in many groups.
Research & Trials
Better thyroid hormone preparations, immunomodulators for Graves.
