Your modifiable risk factors, turned into a plan
Dr. Rob is prototyping a Modifiable Risk Factor Motivator widget on Stroke first. When it ships it embeds right here — turning each Sarcopenia-relevant risk factor into a tracked, evidence-backed action.
If you ever need to explain your Sarcopenia in 30 seconds, start here.
“I have sarcopenia — age-related muscle loss. It makes me weaker, slower, and more prone to falls. I do resistance training, eat enough protein, and stay active. I wanted you to know because falls and weakness can quickly become loss of independence. If I fall, please help me get checked. And if I’m losing weight without trying, that’s a sign I need a workup.”

What Sarcopenia Is
Age-related muscle mass + strength + function loss. Accelerates after 60.
Why Training Matters
Resistance exercise is the single most effective intervention. Bar none.
Red Flags
Fall with possible fracture ยท sudden severe weakness ยท rapid weight loss.
Triggers for Acceleration
Hospitalization, illness, surgery, depression, low protein intake.
Diagnosis
Grip strength, walking speed, DEXA body composition, sometimes muscle ultrasound.
Resistance Training
2-3x/week, all major muscle groups. Supervised PT helpful.
Protein Intake
1.0-1.2 g/kg/day (higher in some). Spread across meals.
Vitamin D + Calcium
Bone-muscle axis is real. Check levels.
Walking + Balance
Daily walking + balance work (tai chi, yoga). Pairs with resistance.
Make Every Visit Count
Bring grip-strength and walking-speed trends if measured.
Your Care Team
PCP or geriatrician, PT, dietitian, sometimes endocrinology.
Activity Trackers
Steps, exercise minutes โ feedback that drives habit.
Insurance & Cost
PT often covered. SilverSneakers and similar programs covered by Medicare.
Teach & Mentor
Sarcopenia is hidden but reversible. Spread the strength-training message.
Advocate
Push for sarcopenia screening in primary care.
Research & Trials
Myostatin inhibitors, optimized protein protocols, novel exercise modes.
