Your modifiable risk factors, turned into a plan
Dr. Rob is prototyping a Modifiable Risk Factor Motivator widget on Stroke first. When it ships it embeds right here — turning each PTSD-relevant risk factor into a tracked, evidence-backed action.
If you ever need to explain your PTSD in 30 seconds, start here.
“I have PTSD. Something happened to me that my brain hasn’t fully processed, so certain triggers can bring back the feeling like it’s happening now. I’m in treatment — therapy and sometimes medication. I wanted you to know because if you see me suddenly shut down, become distant, or have a strong reaction to a sound or smell, that’s a flashback. Give me space. And if I ever mention hurting myself, please take it seriously — 988 or 911.”

What PTSD Actually Is
Trauma response that didn’t fully integrate. Not weakness.
Why Treatment Helps
Trauma-focused therapy (CPT, EMDR, PE) plus sometimes SSRIs.
Spot the Red Flags
Suicidal thoughts with plan = 988. Severe dissociation = urgent. Veterans Crisis Line: 988+1.
Triggers & Patterns
Sights, sounds, smells, dates, locations, certain people. Mapping helps.
Symptom Clusters
Intrusion ยท avoidance ยท negative mood ยท arousal. All four typical.
Medication Discipline
SSRIs slowly. Prazosin for nightmares. Avoid benzo dependence.
Coping Toolkit
Grounding (5-4-3-2-1), breathing, naming surroundings, safe space.
Sleep Hygiene
Nightmares disrupt sleep, sleep loss worsens everything. Treat both.
Substance Awareness
Alcohol and substances numb but worsen long-term. Address together.
Make Every Visit Count
Bring symptom diary, sleep log, trigger events, response patterns.
Your Care Team
Therapist (trauma-trained), psychiatrist, peer support, sometimes VA.
Apps & Resources
PTSD Coach (free from VA), trauma support communities.
Insurance & VA
VA covers veterans extensively. Civilian insurance has parity laws.
Teach & Mentor
Survivors-helping-survivors is uniquely effective. Peer support.
Fight Stigma
PTSD treatment works. Silent suffering is the disease, not the symptom.
Research & Trials
MDMA-assisted therapy, ketamine, neuromodulation, novel SSRIs.
