Your modifiable risk factors, turned into a plan
Dr. Rob is prototyping a Modifiable Risk Factor Motivator widget on Stroke first. When it ships it embeds right here — turning each HIV-relevant risk factor into a tracked, evidence-backed action.
If you ever need to explain your HIV in 30 seconds, start here.
“I have HIV and I’m on antiretroviral therapy — my virus is undetectable, which means I cannot transmit it to anyone (U=U). I wanted you to know because this is no longer the disease it was in the 1980s — it’s a manageable chronic condition. If I get a fever or new infection, please help me take it seriously and get prompt care.”

What HIV Is
Virus that attacks immune cells. ART suppresses it. Lifelong treatment = lifelong health.
Why ART Works
Suppresses virus to undetectable. U=U: undetectable = untransmittable.
Spot the Red Flags
Severe respiratory, neurological, or febrile illness — could be opportunistic.
Adherence Matters
Missed doses risk resistance. Long-acting injectables now an option.
Numbers
Viral load (undetectable goal), CD4 count (≥500 ideal).
ART Daily
Same time-ish, with or without food per regimen. Don’t skip.
Routine Labs
Viral load + CD4 every 3-6 months once stable.
Cancer + STI Screening
Higher risk of certain cancers. Anal Pap, HPV vaccine, regular STI.
CV Risk
HIV plus some ART raises CV risk. Lipid/BP attention matters.
Make Every Visit Count
Bring meds list, side effects, mental health status.
Your Care Team
HIV doctor + PCP + sometimes pharmacist + social work.
Adherence Tools
Pill reminders, smartphone apps, refill auto-renewal.
Insurance, Ryan White
Coverage exists for all HIV patients regardless of insurance. ADAP.
Teach & Mentor
Newly diagnosed people fear stigma and death. You're evidence neither is necessary.
Fight Stigma
U=U is the message. People stop hiding when stigma drops.
Research & Trials
Cure research, long-acting injectables, broadly neutralizing antibodies.
