Your modifiable risk factors, turned into a plan
Dr. Rob is prototyping a Modifiable Risk Factor Motivator widget on Stroke first. When it ships it embeds right here — turning each Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)-relevant risk factor into a tracked, evidence-backed action.
If you ever need to explain your Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) in 30 seconds, start here.
“I have (or had) a DVT — a blood clot in my leg. I’m on a blood thinner to prevent the clot from growing or breaking off into my lungs. I wanted you to know because if my leg suddenly gets much more swollen, hot, or red, that’s a concern — and if I get short of breath or chest pain, that could be a pulmonary embolism. Call 911.”

What a DVT Actually Is
A blood clot in a deep vein, usually leg. Can extend or break off to lungs (PE).
Why You're on a Blood Thinner
Prevents extension and embolism. Several months minimum, sometimes lifelong.
Spot a PE Fast
Sudden shortness of breath ยท sharp chest pain with breathing ยท cough up blood โ 911.
Triggers & Prevention
Long sitting (flights, surgery), immobility, dehydration, hormones, clotting disorders.
Provoked vs Unprovoked
Provoked = surgery, leg cast. Unprovoked = your body did this on its own. Treatment duration differs.
Anticoagulant Adherence
Take it on time, every day. Don't double up. Don't stop without team OK.
Compression Stockings
Reduces post-thrombotic syndrome if prescribed. Wear them as directed.
Move & Hydrate
Walking, ankle pumps, hydration โ especially on long flights or car rides.
Make Every Visit Count
Bring your meds, recent INR if on warfarin, any leg changes.
Your Care Team
PCP, hematologist for complex cases, anticoagulation clinic if on warfarin.
Telehealth
Anticoagulation management works well via telehealth.
Insurance & Cost
DOACs are pricey. Warfarin is cheap. Compression stockings โ get a Rx for coverage.
Surgery & Anticoagulation
Anticoagulation plan around procedures matters a lot. Don't stop without a plan.
Teach & Mentor
People mid-flight need this knowledge. So do post-surgery patients.
Advocate
DVT/PE is preventable in many settings. Push for prophylaxis awareness.
Research & Trials
Newer anticoagulants, factor XI inhibitors, IVC filter outcomes.
