Your modifiable risk factors, turned into a plan
Dr. Rob is prototyping a Modifiable Risk Factor Motivator widget on Stroke first. When it ships it embeds right here — turning each Aortic Valve Disease-relevant risk factor into a tracked, evidence-backed action.
If you ever need to explain your Aortic Valve Disease in 30 seconds, start here.
“I have aortic valve disease — either stenosis (narrowed) or regurgitation (leaky). I watch my symptoms and get regular echocardiograms. I wanted you to know because symptoms — chest pain with effort, fainting, or marked shortness of breath — change my care quickly, often into needing valve replacement. Fainting with effort is always a 911 call for me.”

What Aortic Valve Disease Is
Stenosis (narrowed) or regurgitation (leaky). Both can fail the heart over time.
Medication Limits
Meds manage symptoms but don't fix the valve. Replacement is sometimes needed.
Spot the Red Flags
Fainting with effort ยท chest pain at rest ยท severe shortness of breath.
Symptom Triggers
Exertion, dehydration, fast heart rates, fluid shifts.
Severity Numbers
Valve area, gradient, regurgitation grade. Trended on echo over time.
Daily Meds
Often BP meds + diuretic. Some patients on anticoagulation.
Echo Schedule
Regular imaging โ yearly or more often near intervention threshold.
Activity Limits
Vigorous activity restricted if severe stenosis. Stay engaged within limits.
Make Every Visit Count
Bring your symptoms, exercise tolerance, and recent echo report.
Your Care Team
Cardiologist + structural heart team + PCP.
Telehealth
Med management works telehealth; imaging is in-person.
Insurance & Cost
Valve procedures covered. TAVR has changed the landscape; costs vary.
TAVR vs SAVR
Less-invasive transcatheter vs surgical. Discussed by Heart Team.
Teach & Mentor
Pre-op patients value hearing from someone who came through it.
Advocate
Push for early symptom recognition โ many wait too long to mention them.
Research & Trials
TAVR durability, mitral and tricuspid transcatheter therapies.
