A Welcome from Coach Lucy & Dr. Rob
Twenty-five years on, most of us still remember exactly where we were standing. This Listening Lab holds two perspectives on that same morning — one from a bedroom in Tucson, one from the rubble in Lower Manhattan — and the long, quiet way those two lives eventually crossed.
Every song here exists in many genres. That's the point. The same story lands differently depending on how you hear it — and so does a day like this one. Press play, slow the tempo down if you want to sing it, score the version that moves you, and take a minute to notice who in your own life answered a call.
Coach Lucy's Tip: Start with the version you'd never normally pick. That's usually the one that gets you.
That's really all I did
A buddy called: “Rob, we need help. Grab who you can and come.” There was no roadmap for what was waiting — just work that had to be done. Dr. Rob has never described himself as a hero. He was a doctor with something to offer, so he showed up.
The Police Academy became a clinic and a place to sleep. Officers came in carrying questions and memories they would rather not keep: Doc, what was in that cloud? What will this someday do to me? Sometimes the most truthful answer available was we don't know — we'll see. So they listened, they measured, and they captured where those men had been: a health baseline for 1,756 officers.
He walked through Ground Zero and saw things he still carries. He helped an officer hang a flag because the man needed one more pair of hands. Back home, churches filled a van and strangers asked what they could do — and everywhere he looked, the heroes weren't just a few.
The lesson he brought back is the one this whole network is built on: readiness doesn't mean living in fear. Build relationships in ordinary times, before extraordinary times get here. Learn what you can, share what you know, know who to call — and ordinary people working together become a Force for Health for all.
For every first responder, volunteer, and neighbor who showed up — and for everyone still carrying what they saw.
