🎗️ Aligned with: World Lung Day

You Take About 20,000 Breaths a Day. Who Protects the Air?

You can choose your food. You can choose whether you smoke. You mostly can't choose the air. Dr. Rob, stethoscope on, on the one exposure you can't opt out of.

He wears the stethoscope for this one, and says outright that it worries him. World Lung Day is organised by the Forum of International Respiratory Societies — the lung doctors and respiratory therapists of the world — and their asks are simple: don't smoke, control air pollution, make lung care equitable. Every quote below plays the exact moment from the recording — just tap it.

🔵 Dr. Rob Gillio · Host

The arithmetic of a day

You take 20,000 breaths a day, about, plus or minus a couple thousand. Who's protecting that air?

Each of those breaths brings new air across a very thin membrane and straight into the bloodstream. Whatever is in it — chemicals, particles — comes along. Then you exhale, and do it again.

The exposure you can't opt out of

We can choose our food, we can choose whether we smoke, but it's hard to choose what air we breathe.

That is what makes this different from the rest of the series. Most of Dr. Rob's doses end with something you personally control. This one can't, entirely — which is why he pushes it toward community action, and why he offers a hopeful precedent: he watched measured lead exposure drop dramatically within a year of getting lead out of gasoline. Something that simple, at population scale, worked.

Start extremely local

If you can see it or smell it in the air, try to avoid it.
Dr. Rob Gillio · Host & Chief Health Officer, The Force for Health Network🛡️ Global Advisor🏛️ Chamber Member

The rest of his asks are deliberately small and close to home. Change the filters in the furnace and the air conditioning. Don't smoke. Pay attention to what the factories, mines and industries near you are putting into the air, and be active about it locally. Then, at the end, the instruction that makes the whole dose land — take a deep breath and enjoy it.

✏️ Editor’s note: The episode carries the host's opinion on air-quality regulation; keep any policy claim freshly sourced and neutrally worded in reuse, and label the opinion as his. Soften the "surface area of a tennis court" analogy — lung surface area estimates vary widely by measurement method.
