Public Health Happens Before Anybody Becomes a Patient

Trail work, habitat cleanup, a hazard removed from a path. Nothing dramatic happens — and Dr. Rob says that's exactly what public health looks like when it works.

Two observances land at the end of September — one global, one his home state's — and Dr. Rob uses the pairing to argue for a wider definition of who counts as a health worker. Every quote below plays the exact moment from the recording — just tap it.

The claim

You are public health, and public health happens before anyone becomes a patient.
Dr. Rob Gillio · Host & Chief Health Officer, The Force for Health Network🛡️ Global Advisor🏛️ Chamber Member

The work he has in mind is unglamorous: habitat cleanup, trail days, environmental education. What it produces is better-filtered drinking water, toxic waste that does not leach into groundwater, a trip hazard that never causes a fall, and a park calm enough that somebody can actually rest in it — which he counts as a mental health outcome, not a nice-to-have.

Why nobody thanks you for it

And most of these projects are nearly invisible. Your actions, no one's going to notice because nothing dramatic really happens.
Dr. Rob Gillio · Host & Chief Health Officer, The Force for Health Network🛡️ Global Advisor🏛️ Chamber Member

That invisibility is the reason prevention is chronically undervalued, and he does not pretend otherwise. He is also honest about the ceiling. Perfect prevention does not produce a world with no patients — eventually everyone gets sick, and eventually everyone dies. What it buys is delay, and the quality of the years before.

Stewards as infrastructure

His structural move is to put environmental health professionals and volunteers inside the infrastructure of human health rather than alongside it. Healthy land, water and air become Community Health Capital — assets a place either has or has to build.

These community parks, clean water, our clean air, our forests, our ecosystems, are a gift just like our health.
