Clean hands: the number one defense

Healthcare-associated infections harm huge numbers of patients every year, and the most powerful weapon against them is also the simplest: clean hands at the right moments. It outperforms any single drug or glove.

Think of your hands as a shared pen passed around a room. Whatever the last person had is now on it. Hand hygiene wipes the pen clean before it reaches the next person.

The five moments

  • Before touching a patient.
  • Before a clean or aseptic task.
  • After body-fluid exposure.
  • After touching the patient.
  • After touching the patient's surroundings.
Soap and water vs. alcohol rub: the alcohol rub is fast and effective for most moments, but soap and water is required when hands are visibly soiled and preferred for spore-formers like C. diff — alcohol does not reliably kill spores.

Standard precautions

Because you can never be certain who is carrying an infection, treat every patient's blood and body fluids as potentially infectious: hand hygiene plus gloves and other PPE whenever contact is possible.
