You already lived this with Mrs. Carter. Now let's understand it deeply โ€” how skin breaks down, how you prevent it with your hands, and how you pass it on. Learn it, live it, share it.
Learn It

Hygiene is never just hygiene

Bathing, dressing, and repositioning are activities of daily living โ€” and every one of them doubles as a full assessment. During a bed bath your hands are on every inch of the patient, so it is the moment you catch new skin breakdown, bruising, edema, weakness, or a change in how the patient thinks and responds.

Think of a mechanic washing a car by hand. They are not just cleaning it โ€” they feel every dent and scratch as they go. Your hands do the same across your patient's whole body.

What the bath assesses

  • Skin โ€” redness, breakdown, bruises, rashes, moisture.
  • Mobility & strength โ€” how they move and help (or cannot).
  • Mental status โ€” orientation, mood, any change from baseline.
  • Comfort & dignity โ€” pain with movement, and how cared-for they feel.
Dignity is the care, not an extra. Privacy, keeping the patient covered except the area you are washing, a warm room, safe water temperature, and explaining each step keep a vulnerable person in control.

Perineal care matters

Clean front to back with a clean cloth to keep bacteria away from the urethra โ€” a simple step that helps prevent urinary tract infection, and one to do gently and carefully around a catheter.
