The Athletic Trainer (AT) is often the first medical professional on the scene when something goes wrong at a practice or game. What separates a good response from a tragedy usually isn't luck — it's preparation. An Emergency Action Plan (EAP) that's written, rehearsed, and ready to activate is the single most important safety tool a venue has. Let's explore what it is and the emergencies it prepares you for.
Honest note — this is exploration, not certification. This module builds pre-professional readiness and awareness for students curious about athletic training. It is not BOC exam prep and does not certify you in CPR, first aid, or anything else. Becoming a certified Athletic Trainer (ATC) requires a CAATE-accredited master's degree and passing the Board of Certification (BOC) exam. In a real emergency, trained, credentialed responders act — always call 911.
The foundation

What is an Emergency Action Plan (EAP)?

An EAP is a written, venue-specific plan that spells out exactly what everyone does when a life-threatening emergency happens. Professional guidelines (NATA, and the interassociation consensus statements) say every athletic venue should have one — and it should be rehearsed at least annually before the season starts.

Why every venue needs its own. A football stadium, a swimming pool, an auxiliary gym, and an away field each have different access points, equipment locations, and EMS routes. A plan that isn't specific to this venue can cost minutes when minutes matter.
Know the parts

Core elements of an EAP

A complete EAP is short, clear, and posted where the team can see it. Its core pieces:

👥 Roles & responsibilities
Who gives care, who calls 911, who retrieves the AED, who directs EMS in.
📞 Communication
Working phone on hand, the number to call, and a backup if signal is poor.
🔋 Equipment & AED location
Where the AED, first-aid kit, and emergency gear are — and that they're checked and ready.
🚑 EMS access & directions
Exact venue address, gate/entrance for the ambulance, and who unlocks and flags it.
A simple test. Could a substitute staff member pick up your EAP and know their job in the first 60 seconds? If yes, it's working.
Be ready for these

Life-threatening emergencies an AT prepares for

The EAP exists because a handful of emergencies can turn deadly fast. Recognize them and know that rapid activation is the theme for every one:

❤️ Sudden cardiac arrest
Collapsed, unresponsive, not breathing normally. Start CPR immediately and get the AED on fast — early defibrillation saves lives. Call 911.
🔥 Exertional heat stroke
A true emergency: very high core temperature plus confusion/collapse. The mantra is cool first, transport second — rapid whole-body cooling.
🩸 Severe bleeding
Life-threatening hemorrhage: apply firm direct pressure, pack the wound, and use a tourniquet for uncontrolled limb bleeding. "Stop the Bleed."
🦴 Spine injury precautions
Suspected head/neck injury: minimize movement, stabilize the head, and let trained responders manage the airway and any equipment removal.
🐝 Anaphylaxis
Severe allergic reaction — swelling, hives, trouble breathing. Epinephrine auto-injector is first-line; call 911.
Two things every time. Activate the EAP (call 911, send for the AED) and start care you're trained for — the two happen together, not one after the other.
The heat spectrum

Exertional heat illness — and how to prevent it

Heat illness lives on a spectrum. Catching it early keeps a mild problem from becoming a deadly one:

🦵 Heat cramps
Painful muscle cramping. Rest, cool, fluids, and light stretching.
😓 Heat exhaustion
Heavy sweating, dizziness, nausea, weakness — but mind is still clear. Stop, cool, hydrate.
🚨 Heat stroke
Very high core temp + altered mental status (confusion, collapse). Life-threatening — cool first, call 911.
🧊 Cool aggressively
For heat stroke, cold-water immersion is the gold standard when available — cool before transport.

Prevention is the AT's real superpower here:

  • Acclimatization — ease athletes into heat over 1–2 weeks; most heat deaths happen in the first days of preseason.
  • Hydration — planned fluid breaks before, during, and after activity.
  • Work:rest ratios — more frequent, longer rest breaks as conditions get hotter.
  • WBGT / heat-index awareness — monitor Wet-Bulb Globe Temperature and adjust or cancel activity by the reading.
Environment & weather

Cold and lightning safety

The environment itself can be the emergency. Two more the EAP should cover:

⚡ Lightning
"When thunder roars, go indoors." The 30-30 rule: if thunder follows lightning by 30 seconds or less, seek a safe building/vehicle; wait 30 minutes after the last thunder/lightning before returning.
❄️ Cold & hypothermia
Watch for shivering, clumsiness, and confusion. Get athletes warm and dry; layer, cover the head, and move out of wind and wet.
Lightning has no "safe" outdoor spot. There is no waiting it out under a tree or in a dugout — get everyone to a fully enclosed building or hard-topped vehicle, and don't rush back.
The whole point

Prepare · rehearse · activate

A plan on a shelf saves no one. What saves lives is a plan that's been written for the venue, practiced by the team, and can be activated in seconds. Rehearsal turns panic into procedure — everyone knows their role before the worst day arrives.

Rehearsal is the difference. Walk the EAP at least once a year. When it's muscle memory, the response is fast, calm, and coordinated — exactly what an emergency demands.
