A learning environment is only as strong as the people running it. When the state retired the barbering licensure tiers in 2017, it didn't just remove a title — it removed the Certified Educator line that told a shop, a student, and a customer that this instructor had earned the right to teach. Overnight, anyone could print "educator" on a card. This program restores that line as a private, verifiable, hours-backed certification, so that everyone trained in the Academy is trained by someone genuinely qualified to do it.
You cannot certify what you have not mastered, and you cannot teach well just because you cut well. A Certified Educator has proven both — the craft and the ability to transfer it — and their own certification stays active only by keeping current. Adequacy is checkable, and it flows downhill: a properly-trained trainer is the only source of a properly-trained professional.
Before 2017, the state was the trusted keeper of "who can teach." That keeper is gone. The gap is real and it is a business risk, not just a morale one.
A manager/educator tier with documented hours and testing behind it. A student knew their instructor had cleared a real bar. A shop could require it. A customer inherited that assurance.
A private FFH credential that proves craft mastery and teaching competency, kept current by recertification, and checkable by anyone on a public verify page. Better than a sticker — it is auditable.
The Train-the-Trainer certification is the path to Tier 3 — Certified Educator on the Barbershop credential ladder. It is designed for your master barbers and lead stylists: the people already carrying the shop's teaching load, whose best material deserves to be captured, standardized, and recognized.
Five modules, delivered in the same hybrid way the Academy trains everyone: knowledge online, practice on the floor, competency demonstrated live. This is where a master barber learns to teach like one.
Every Educator candidate is scored against the same rubric, so the credential means the same thing whether it's earned in De Pere or in any partner market. A candidate must demonstrate all five.
State the objective and the bar up front, so the trainee knows exactly what "done right" looks like before they try it.
Demonstrate the skill to the house standard, then break it down. Errors modeled become errors taught.
Move the trainee from watching to doing with structured coaching, catching mistakes kindly and early.
Have the trainee explain and perform it back. If they can't teach it back, they haven't got it yet — and neither have you.
The same care the Caretaker shows a customer, the Educator shows a trainee. No one is embarrassed into learning.
The whole point is that "trained by a qualified trainer" is provable at every step. The credential is built so quality flows downhill and can never quietly lapse.
Like every tier on the ladder, the Certified Educator credential is issued on Open Badges 3.0, cryptographically signed by Force for Health, and resolvable to a public verify page. This is what replaces "call the state to confirm the instructor."
