Where As, Jazz Is · Advance the Dream

The Wingtapper Cube

Your personal Cube of Influence, Gratitude, and Service — the jazz way. Reach UP to the legends & mentors you study, OUT to your bandmates & community, and DOWN to the players coming up behind you. This is how we Advance the Dream.

A note from Coach Lucy

Why we tap each other's wings.

"You already know everyone you need to know." — Bob Beaudine, The Power of Who — his Personal Board of Directors exercise, reinterpreted here for the players of Where As, Jazz Is.

That line started it for me. I read The Power of Who in a season when I was about to give up on a goal I really wanted, and Bob was right — I didn't need to find new people. I needed to recognize, thank, and lean into the ones already in my circle, and make sure I was doing the same for the ones coming up behind me.

That's a Wingtapper.

A figure with three flowing energy streams: gold rising toward mentors, teal flowing outward toward community, and coral descending to lift up the next generation.
"The flock always outdistances those who fly alone." — Chinese proverb
The body was made to reach in three directions. Up for mentorship. Out for community. Down to lift up.

Watch a flock of geese fly south. They fly in a V because the tip of each wing creates an updraft for the bird behind them. They literally tap each other's wings into the sky. The lead bird breaks the wind. When the lead gets tired, another bird rotates up. They honk to encourage each other. If one falls out of formation, two others go down with it until it can fly again. They never make the journey alone.

That's the practice. That's the Cube.

⬆️
Reach UP & HIGHTo the jazz legends and mentors you admire and study — Armstrong, Ellington, Coltrane, your band director, the players whose records you wear out. They lift you into headwinds you can't yet hear.
↔️
Reach OUTTo your peers. The quality friends, colleagues, kindred spirits flying alongside you right now. These are the ones you'll go through everything with.
⬇️
Reach DOWNTo the next generation of players and listeners coming up behind you. Teach a lick, share a record, start a jam. They need you to be their Wingtapper. Always. That is how the tradition survives.

You exercise these three muscles your whole life. Not in a season. Not for a project. Forever. Because the flow goes both ways — when you stop reaching up, you stop growing. When you stop reaching out, you stop belonging. When you stop reaching down, you stop mattering.

This is how you build your base, your force field, and your foundation — your personal flight formation. It's how you keep the four P's alive in your life:

🎯Purposefinds you when you're connected to people who see you
🚪Positioningopens doors that solo flight never reaches
🔥Passionstays lit because you're flying with people who believe
⛰️Perseveranceholds when the wind shifts — you're never falling alone

The Wingtappers Cube Challenge is the exercise. The 5×5 grid is the formation. The four-level activation ladder is the rep count. The LIVE Lounge is where we sweat together.

Welcome to the practice. The sky's wide enough for all of us — and the flock honks louder when you join.
