▶ Lesson Plan
Grades 6–1245 minMusic · History · Culture

Learning Objectives

  • Identify 10 essential jazz musicians and moments.
  • Explain jazz's roots in Black American history and culture.
  • Connect jazz to protest, resilience, and character.
  • Trace jazz's influence from New Orleans to hip-hop.
🎣 Hook (3 min)
"What do a trumpet, a protest, and a hip-hop beat have in common?" Reveal that today's board covers a century of jazz — and rewards knowing its story.
📖 Vocabulary (7 min)
Preview the 6 categories — Legends, Cities, Sounds, Songs, Justice, and Grab Bag. Pick 🟢 Basics or 🔴 Advanced. Emphasize the 2× Brain Bonus on every correct answer.
🎮 Gameplay (20 min)
Solo: 30 questions, 20s each — aim for 24+ correct ("ON FIRE"). Team: 2–4 teams buzz in; correct = full points + 2× bonus, wrong = lose half. The team that answers correctly picks next.
💬 Debrief (10 min)
Which category came easiest? What's one musician you want to hear now? How does jazz connect to justice and character?
🔗 Extensions (5 min)
Create: write 3 of your own jazz questions. Challenge: replay on Advanced. Research: pick one legacy maker and find a recording to share.

Project on a screen or smartboard. For Team Battle, assign each team a corner; teams buzz with keys 1–4 or the on-screen buttons. In setup you can name each team, pick a team logo, and optionally list players.

⏱ Timing

Solo ~15 min; Team ~25–30 min with buzz-ins and discussion. Budget 5–10 min for debrief.

🎯 Differentiation

100–200 questions are recall (accessible); 300–500 require deeper thinking. Mix team skill levels.
