Painting looks easy. Actually doing it well requires the right tools, the right prep, and a specific sequence. Skip the prep and you'll see roller marks, drips, and an edge nobody calls clean. Follow the steps and your walls look like a magazine cover. Best part: the skill is identical for a bedroom, a kitchen, or a whole apartment. Learn it once, use it forever.
The Painter's Kit
Painting is 80% prep, 20% paint. The amateur skips the prep and spends the next year staring at the edges they missed. The pro tapes off everything, fills every hole, and lays down a drop cloth. Then the paint goes on like magic.
The Three Paint Sheens You Need to Know
Flat / Matte
No shine. Hides imperfections best. Bedrooms, ceilings, living rooms.
Eggshell / Satin
Slight sheen. Wipes clean. Hallways, kids' rooms, bathrooms.

Shiny, washable. Trim, doors, kitchens, bathrooms with high moisture.
Watch It Done Right
How to Use It — The Five Moves
- Prep — patch, tape, drop cloth. Patch holes (Skill 8), sand smooth, tape trim and ceiling, lay drop cloths. This is half the job. Do it right.
- PRIME the patches AND any major color change. One coat of primer on every patched spot, and over the whole wall if you're going light over dark or covering stains.
- Cut in with a brush FIRST. Use a 2.5" angled brush to paint a 3-inch band against every edge — ceiling, trim, corners. Do this BEFORE rolling.
- Roll in 'W' patterns. Roll a big 'W' or 'M' on the wall, then fill it in without lifting the roller. Smooths the paint and avoids roller marks. Always finish each section with a straight UP-DOWN pass.
- Two coats, always. Even 'one-coat' paint looks one-coat-y. Two thinner coats look like a magazine. Wait 2-4 hours between coats — read the can.
The thing nobody tells you: paint matters. Cheap paint takes 3-4 coats and still streaks. Good paint (Behr Premium, Sherwin-Williams ProClassic, Benjamin Moore Regal) covers in two and dries smooth. The $20 you save on cheap paint costs you a Saturday in extra coats.
The Move-In Apartment Plan
Picture it: lease signed, keys in hand, the walls are landlord-beige with scuffs and old nail holes. Here's your weekend:
