Quick Check-In, Before We Begin

Right now, how confident are you setting up a router, TV, or home network?

How likely are you to help someone set up their internet or TV?

One Quick Knowledge Question

Your internet stopped working. Most reliable first step?

The 'power cycle' fixes 70% of internet problems. Unplug modem, wait 30 sec, plug modem back in, wait for lights to stabilize (~2 min), then plug router back in. Costs $0.

Meet Your Home Network

Three things make your internet work: the MODEM (translates the signal coming from your internet company), the ROUTER (broadcasts Wi-Fi and shares the signal between devices), and the DEVICE (your phone, laptop, TV). Sometimes the modem and router are combined into one box (called a 'gateway'). Knowing which is which is half of every troubleshooting call.

How Your Home Network Works

INTERNETOutside line MODEM(translates)From ISP ROUTER(shares Wi-Fi)Wi-Fi sender PHONE LAPTOP TV
ModemTranslates the signal from your internet provider (Comcast, AT&T, etc) into something a router understands.
RouterBroadcasts Wi-Fi. Manages devices. Has your network name (SSID) and password.
GatewaySome boxes are modem+router combined. Common with rental boxes from ISPs.
Ethernet CableWired connection. Fastest, most reliable. Use for TVs, gaming consoles, desktops.
Wi-Fi Bands2.4GHz (slower, longer range) and 5GHz (faster, shorter range). Modern routers handle both.

This whole industry is built on people not knowing it's actually simple. Modem in, router out, devices connect. Half the 'experts' you hire are just doing this exact same thing. You'll be one of them by the end of this lesson.

Three Setup Jobs You'll Do

๐Ÿ“ถ
New Router Setup

Out of the box. Plug into modem. Open phone app. Follow the guided setup.

๐Ÿ“บ
TV / Streaming Setup

HDMI cable in, power on, sign into Netflix/Hulu/etc. 15 minutes total.

๐ŸŽฎ
Gaming / Console Setup

Ethernet cable for best ping. Sign in, link controllers, you're playing.

How to Use It โ€” The Five Moves

  • Identify what you have. Modem-only? Router-only? Combined gateway? Look at the box, check ports. ISP-provided or your own?
  • Power-cycle first. ALWAYS the first troubleshooting move. Unplug modem 30 sec, plug back, wait 2 min. Then router. Then device. Fixes most problems.
  • Use the manufacturer's app. Most modern routers (Eero, Nest, Asus, TP-Link) have phone apps that walk you through setup. Use them โ€” they're easier than the web interface.
  • Name & secure your Wi-Fi. Change the default SSID and password. Use WPA3 or WPA2 security (not 'open'). A strong password (12+ chars) keeps freeloaders off your bandwidth.
  • Wired connections where possible. TV, gaming console, smart hub, desktop PC โ€” use Ethernet if you can. Faster, more reliable, no signal drops.
Rocky
Rocky says
The router's job is hidden. The Wi-Fi just works โ€” until it doesn't. When it doesn't, everyone calls the kid who fixed it last time. That kid is going to be you.

The 'TV Won't Work' Decoder

Most TV setup problems are one of three things:

  • Wrong input. Press the INPUT or SOURCE button on the remote. Cycle through HDMI 1, HDMI 2, etc.
  • HDMI cable bad/loose. Push it in firmly both ends. Try a different HDMI port. Swap cable if available.
  • Wi-Fi not connected (smart TVs). Settings โ†’ Network โ†’ reconnect.

Try those three before calling anyone. They solve 90% of 'my TV won't work' calls.

Safe & Unsafe

โœ… Safe

  • Unplug modems/routers before moving
  • Keep electronics off the floor (water spills)
  • Label cables (painters tape, marker) for future reference
  • Strong unique Wi-Fi password
  • Keep router firmware updated

โš ๏ธ Unsafe

  • Leaving default 'admin' password on the router
  • Open (no-password) Wi-Fi networks
  • Coiling Ethernet cables tightly (kinks)
  • Modems in closets with no ventilation
  • Plugging modem into a surge protector that turns OFF the modem when the protector trips
Phishing & tech-support scams: NO real tech support calls you out of the blue. Microsoft doesn't call you. Apple doesn't call you. Your ISP doesn't call you to ask for your password. Hang up. Never give remote access to a stranger on the phone. Especially: protect elders from these scams.

Why This Is a Force for Health, Wealth & Community

Health: Reliable internet means telehealth, video calls with family, mental health apps, online support groups. Connection is health, especially for isolated elders. Wealth: Geek Squad call: $99. New TV setup at the store: $200. Router install: $150. You'll do them all for free โ€” and become someone's go-to network person. That's a side business if you want it. Community: Help an elder reconnect with grandkids over FaceTime. Help a family avoid scams. Help a kid get connected for online school.
