Right now, how confident are you setting up a router, TV, or home network?
How likely are you to help someone set up their internet or TV?
Your internet stopped working. Most reliable first step?
Three things make your internet work: the MODEM (translates the signal coming from your internet company), the ROUTER (broadcasts Wi-Fi and shares the signal between devices), and the DEVICE (your phone, laptop, TV). Sometimes the modem and router are combined into one box (called a 'gateway'). Knowing which is which is half of every troubleshooting call.
This whole industry is built on people not knowing it's actually simple. Modem in, router out, devices connect. Half the 'experts' you hire are just doing this exact same thing. You'll be one of them by the end of this lesson.
Out of the box. Plug into modem. Open phone app. Follow the guided setup.
HDMI cable in, power on, sign into Netflix/Hulu/etc. 15 minutes total.
Ethernet cable for best ping. Sign in, link controllers, you're playing.
The router's job is hidden. The Wi-Fi just works โ until it doesn't. When it doesn't, everyone calls the kid who fixed it last time. That kid is going to be you.
Most TV setup problems are one of three things:
Try those three before calling anyone. They solve 90% of 'my TV won't work' calls.
Health: Reliable internet means telehealth, video calls with family, mental health apps, online support groups. Connection is health, especially for isolated elders. Wealth: Geek Squad call: $99. New TV setup at the store: $200. Router install: $150. You'll do them all for free โ and become someone's go-to network person. That's a side business if you want it. Community: Help an elder reconnect with grandkids over FaceTime. Help a family avoid scams. Help a kid get connected for online school.
Do at least one. Snap a photo of your work to earn the coins. A grown-up can supervise younger learners.
Don't wait for something to break. Go look at YOUR home network right now. Find the modem. Find the router. Note the make and model. Power-cycle it just for practice. That's how you learn โ by getting hands on the gear.
Find modem, router. Note model. Power cycle. Change default password if it's still default. Test Wi-Fi speed.
