What is Orthostatic Hypotension?Diagnosis

Orthostatic Hypotension (OH) is a drop in blood pressure when you stand up — defined as a fall of ≥20 mmHg systolic or ≥10 mmHg diastolic within 3 minutes of standing. It causes lightheadedness, dizziness, blurred vision, weakness, and falls — especially in older adults. OH is one of the most common, underdiagnosed, and treatable causes of falls and syncope. The treatment is mostly medication adjustments + behavior, with specific drugs for resistant cases.

Stand up slow — the anti-OH morning routineKnow your plan

The first hour after waking is the highest-risk window for OH-related falls. A 30-second routine prevents most of them.

Red flags — call nowAction

Call 911 immediately for: chest pain, pressure, tightness, or burning lasting more than a few minutes — especially if it spreads to the arm, jaw, neck, or back; severe shortness of breath at rest; sudden cold sweat with chest discomfort; nausea or lightheadedness with chest discomfort; sudden weakness on one side, slurred speech, or facial droop (these are stroke signs, often related). Do not drive yourself.
