What Cancer survivor actually is, what protects you every day, and the red flags that mean call now. The same page your care team is reading.
About 1.5 million people in the US are living after a colorectal cancer (CRC) diagnosis. CRC survivorship has three pillars: structured surveillance for recurrence and metachronous cancers, management of treatment late effects (especially after pelvic radiation, ostomy, or oxaliplatin neuropathy), and aggressive secondary prevention. CRC is one of the most preventable cancers — and survivors have one of the most leveraged opportunities to lower recurrence risk through diet, activity, weight, and aspirin (in selected patients).
About 1 in 30 CRC patients has Lynch syndrome — an inherited mismatch-repair gene mutation that dramatically raises lifetime risk of colorectal, endometrial, ovarian, gastric, urothelial, and other cancers. Universal tumor MMR/MSI testing is now standard. If you have not been tested, ask. The result changes your surveillance, your relatives' lives, and your future cancer risks.
