What CKD actually is, what protects you every day, and the red flags that mean call now. The same page your care team is reading.
Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is when your kidneys lose their ability to filter blood, balance fluids, manage minerals, and make urine over time. About 1 in 7 U.S. adults has CKD — and most don't know it. CKD is usually silent until late stages, which is why two simple labs — eGFR and ACR — should be checked yearly if you have hypertension, diabetes, heart disease, sickle cell disease, family history of kidney disease, or are 60+. Catching CKD early lets you slow it dramatically; catching it late often means dialysis or transplant.
The newest tools have changed CKD outcomes dramatically. Used together, they can slow CKD progression to dialysis by years and cut cardiovascular events at the same time.
The 30/30 rule: if your eGFR drops by 30% in less than 2 years, OR your ACR is ≥30, ask your team about adding the kidney-protective four if you are not already on them.
