At just 13 years old, Jayden Gonzalez is already making waves, not just with his saxophone but also with his dedication to social justice and cultural awareness. As our Force for Health Hero Spotlight for August, Jayden, an 8th grader at KIPP Infinity Middle School in Harlem, New York, exemplifies what it means to be a force for good in both his community and beyond. Finding His Voice Through Music Jayden’s journey with music began relatively recently, but it has already become a cornerstone of his identity. “I started playing saxophone around March of 2022, and ever since, I’ve been super attached,” Jayden shared. His passion for music quickly grew into a deeper understanding of its power as a tool for expression and protest. Through programs like Jazz House Kids and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Middle School Jazz Academy, Jayden has honed his skills and found a powerful voice in jazz. Jazz and Social Justice: The Little Rock Nine Jayden’s award-winning presentation on the intersection of jazz and the Little Rock Nine is a testament to his ability to blend history and music into a compelling narrative. His project explored how jazz, particularly the music of Charles Mingus, played a role in the civil rights movement. “Jazz was an impactful form of protest because it allowed people around the world to be aware of the injustices,” Jayden explained. His research and performance impressed his teachers and peers alike, earning him top honors in KIPP NYC’s Social Justice Exhibition. Advancing the Dream When asked what the phrase "Advance the Dream" means to him, Jayden responded with a wisdom beyond his years: “It’s about giving opportunities to Black and Brown people, and others around the world who are less fortunate, to be healthy and wealthy—mentally, physically, and emotionally.” Jayden’s commitment to advancing the dream is evident in his music, his academic pursuits, and his desire to make a positive impact on the world. A Message of Gratitude and Inspiration Jayden attributes much of his success to his music teacher, Ms. Jen Thylacker, whom he describes as his Force for Health Hero. “Ms. Thylacker taught me that it’s okay to get uncomfortable with the uncomfortable. That’s one of her catchphrases, and it’s been the best advice I’ve received because it’s pushed me to be where I am today,” Jayden said. He credits her with opening doors to opportunities that have broadened his horizons and deepened his love for music. As Jayden prepares for 8th grade and looks forward to new challenges and opportunities, he remains committed to spreading peace, love, and cultural awareness through his music. His story is a powerful reminder that even at a young age, one can be a catalyst for change and a true Force for Health.
