Population Health is a TEAM Sport, and sometimes the most valuable players are the ones ensuring our neighbors have the most basic essentials to live with dignity.
At the Force for Health® Network, we talk a lot about the Social Determinants of Health—the conditions in which people are born, grow, live, work, and age. While we often focus on things like broadband or nutrition, there is a "silent crisis" affecting thousands of Arizona families: Hygiene Insecurity.
This month, we are proud to shine our Hero Spotlight on the Arizona Diaper Bank, the very first diaper bank in the nation, serving Arizona since 1994.
When a family lacks access to diapers or incontinence supplies, it creates a ripple effect that impacts physical health, mental well-being, and economic stability. The data is startling:
• 1 in 3 families struggle with the cost of diapers.
• 1 in 4 menstruators miss work, school, or outings because of a lack of period supplies (Period Poverty).
• 1 in 2 individuals are impacted by daily incontinence.
Without diapers, parents cannot drop their children off at daycare. Without daycare, parents cannot go to work. This creates a cycle of poverty that affects the entire community.
The Arizona Diaper Bank acts as a central hub for health and dignity. They are not just handing out supplies; they are promoting dignity through community partnerships.
• Massive Impact: Annually, they distribute nearly 4 million diapers, incontinence supplies, and period products.
• The Power of Partnership: They don't work alone. They utilize an extensive network of 55 community partner agencies across Arizona to ensure these supplies reach the most vulnerable populations.
By filling this gap, the Arizona Diaper Bank allows seniors to age with dignity, ensures students don't miss school due to period poverty, and helps parents maintain employment.
In the Force for Health® Network, we challenge our members to MOVE, LEARN, SERVE, and EARN. Here is how you can apply that framework to support this incredible organization:
Understand the need. Diaper need and period poverty are often invisible struggles. Educate yourself on how hygiene insecurity impacts mental health and economic mobility in our state. Recognizing that 1 in 3 families struggle is the first step toward empathy and action.
Advocate for dignity. Whether it is ensuring your workplace has accessible period products or destigmatizing adult incontinence, you can create a culture of support in your own circles.
The Arizona Diaper Bank offers tangible ways for you to get involved and SERVE your community:
• Volunteer: Opportunities are available for individuals and groups in both Phoenix and Tucson to wrap diapers and organize inventory.
• Host a Drive: You can organize a diaper or period supply drive at your school, church, or business. This fosters community empowerment through impactful service.
• Donate: Financial contributions allow them to buy supplies in bulk at a fraction of the cost you pay at the store.
As the first diaper bank in the United States, the Arizona Diaper Bank has brought over 30 years of leadership to this cause. They are a perfect example of a Force for Health Hero Organization, breaking down silos to solve a root-cause health issue.
